Fahan
|
 |
Fahan, a peaceful resort, on the
shores of Lough Swilly takes its name from St. Mura who was the first
abbot of a Columban foundation of the 7th century. The most interesting
item in the old graveyard is a flat two-faced cross dating from this
time and which is supposed to mark the grave of the saint. |
 |
St. Mura's cross is a superb
example of interlaced stone carving. Archaeologists have
deciphered the writing on the north face as the Greek version of
the Gloria Patria which dates from the mid 7th century. Built
into the wall of the graveyard the visitor will find two
interesting carved stones. One displays a Greek cross the other
has a curious cavity in the centre |
