Standing Stones at Cashel These are two examples of
approximately 300 in the county. They are usually dated to the
Bronze Age (2500 - 4000 years ago) but can date to recent
times (scratching posts for cattle). There are a number of
possible functions for this type of monument, a ritual
function, boundary markers, marking ancient routeways or
marking fords. They can also be part of larger monuments which
have been partially destroyed. i.e. stone circles or stone
alignments. In Irish they are known as Gallan, Dallan or
Leacht.
Could these examples be part of a north-south alignment (they
are in close proximity to each other) or mark an ancient
routeway (they run parallel to the modern road through the
glen)
Go back into Carndonagh and take road for Moville. About three
miles out of town is Carrowmore Crosses (signposted).
