The Heritage Trail

Welcome to Inishowen.
The aim of this guide is to list and describe as many monuments
as possible in the Inishowen peninsula. It is fortunate that a
large number of them have survived in good condition ranging
from the humble standing stone to the megalithic tombs, stone
circles, forts, high crosses and castles of the seventeenth
century.

It is important
that conservation of sites and monuments is given a high priority and on
a practical level, an improved network of sign posting is required, so
that places of historical interest are highlighted in the interests of
the public. As many of our monuments are on private property, care
should be taken with gates, livestock, crops, hedges and fences. Most
landowners welcome the public and fulfill their role in
protecting sites on their lands.
We would like to thank Sean Beattie for his input and support
with the Historical Antiquities Pages. |
