Cooley Cross & Skull House - Moville Cooley is situated on good land on a steep hill that overlooks Lough Foyle and Moville is the site of a monastery founded by St. Finian in Patrician times. The cross stands on the entrance to the graveyard. It dates back to before 1098. Within the grounds of the graveyard are remaining walls of a Monastery founded by St. Patrick.
It was not unusual for St. Patrick or his contemporaries to consecrate pagan shrines to ease the trauma of conversion, so possibly this cross predates the ecclesiastical foundation. Uncarved, the cross contains a pierced ring and a hole, suggesting it may originally have been a more ancient hole stone. Cooley Cross is a plain undecorated cross compared to others found in Inishowen. There is a footprint on the base stone which is supposed to be St. Patrick's.

One of the most interesting buildings is the Skull House. This is a stone structure closely modelled on a beehive. It was originally used as an oratory and then a mortuary. There are still bones to be seen inside the Skull House. Near the Skull House is a small stone inscribed with a cross.

Although the graveyard is of fairly recent origin the Skull House and the cross (which has been retained in its original location) are the survivors of an earlier tradition and of many attacks including the Vikings.

Back to Moville and continue through the town to Greencastle. Continue past the harbour and take left turn for Stroove and into your right is Northburgh Castle.
