An Grianan Fort
Widely regarded as one of the finest stone forts in Ireland It rests on top of the hill of An Grianan with staggering views for miles covering Lough Foyle, Lough Swilly, and Londonderry/Derry. Legend says it was built by the ancient gods and was known as the Sun Palace. Traces of ancient earthworks, dating to the early Iron Age, surround the fort. It was destroyed by Murtogh O
Brien, king of Munster in 1101 however, it was reconstructed by Dr Bernard of Derry in 1870.
